Siting Montage
As part of my siting exercise I decided that a big open space would suit my museum proposal well. It could be placed within the center of the space with roads or rivers that lead to it creating a network of movement towards the museum. The sites that I researched included Parramatta park, Cockatoo Island and the Sydney Bangaroo Site.
I finally decided to go with Cockatoo island as it provided a central area within Sydney Harbour that has rivers and channels all the way around it portraying the network concept. The access to Cockatoo Island would be by boat that would connect to it through the various routs that it takes, again portraying a network.
Written Brief
My Architecture is based from the concepts of Network and Extrusion. These concepts are derived from the architecture of Peter Eisenman in his Houses and the Memorial To The Murdered Jews of Europe, as well as from Zaha Hadid's Zagreb International Airport.
The concepts of Extrusion and Network seem to join together in making an architecture. I have taken the view that one cannot work without the other. In order to create a network that breaks the traditional grid, one must start from connected points and extrude into various levels of the 3D plane in order to create a unique architecture.
The function of my Architecture is that of a Museum. The Museum entrance point will be that of the shape of a pentagon. It will then extrude from three corners in a clockwise direction which connects to a new row of museum space. This space will conform to a set space with a broken grid. It will also extrude out from the corners to create large spaces for museum exhibits, also following the broken grid structure in the 3D plane.
This continued extrusion process and connections to spaces will continue a further 2 more times in order to create the finished architecture. The museum spaces will be placed on different levels in order to incorporate the breaking of the grid in the third dimension.
