Precedent Task

1) Brief outline of Project One

For Project One my nominated Architect was Peter Eisenman. I decided to focus on his House designs, specifically on House 2.

From this design I discovered the concepts of Grid and Extrusion.  The way that he uses simple shapes, places them in a grid and finally extrudes them in unique ways, as a result breaking the grid in a certain fashion but creating an architecture which still retains a hint of a grid was a very different way to creating architecture that I had ever seen before.

As a result  I created a Monument piece of Architecture that encapsulated these concepts within it.

2) A Visual Analysis of x2 Precedent Studies as a pair

Grid

Both the Memorial by Peter Eisenman and Zagreb Airport by Zaha Hadid have an evident grid/network structure when viewed from above or as a plan. Although the Zagreb Airport doesn't have a normal grid layout like the Memorial it still serves the function of a grid/network. It provides a structured plan to the design which is needed when designing such a large piece of architecture.

Extrusion

The blocks in the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe can all be seen to be on different planes as viewed in the image. The squares, as highlighted, continue to change height in different ways as your view progresses through the image, highlighting the sense of scale the Architecture has and is trying to achieve through the Memorial. As a likeness the Zagreb Airport has many irregular shapes that create openings into the building which are used as windows. It allows light to extrude itself into and out of the building creating great spectacles especially at night.

The highlighted areas show the different views that can be achieved through the use of extrusion on certain objects or shapes within an architecture. The Peter Eisenman Memorial creates a wave like structure and appearance through the extrusion of the blocks in an up and down fashion. The Zagreb Airport creates a web like appearance through the extrusion of shapes from the roof, allowing light in. This extrusion pushes some of the roof up and downwards in certain areas creating a unique design.

3) A Design Proposal and Design Draft for Assignment 3

  • Public Transport Terminal: i.e. airport, train station
  • Pathways between buildings: Futuristic, bridge
  • Museum

4) A short description on your prescribed additional representation

The main representation I will use for Assignment 3 is CryEngine. Since my two concepts are network/grid and extrusion I feel that they would both be expressed in the greatest way possible through an interactive environment. It would allow me to highlight the pathways being created by my grid as well as showing extruding objects such as bridges or walkways that could form part of my final design.
I may also use Build Ar to again highlight some interactive elements that would show my concepts in greater depth.
The main modelling program i will use is 3DS Max as stated in the course outline.
